Cable Ampacity Derating Factors: Temperature and Grouping Guide
Learn how ambient temperature, cable grouping, installation method and soil conditions affect field cable ampacity.

Why the catalogue number is not enough
A datasheet rating is based on defined reference conditions. A hot plant room, crowded tray, enclosed conduit or buried route can change heat dissipation. Treat the catalogue value as an input to the engineering calculation, not as an automatic field approval.
Inputs to collect before sizing
Record ambient temperature, number of loaded circuits, installation method, spacing, soil thermal conditions, route length, voltage-drop target and terminal temperature limits. Symbols and factor names vary between IEC, NEC and local methods, so use the governing project standard.
Common mistakes
Do not use a free-air rating for a fully enclosed conduit, apply a grouping factor to the wrong number of circuits, ignore seasonal temperature, or select the cable before the voltage-drop and short-circuit checks are complete.
RFQ information
Send voltage, load current, length, installation method, grouping, ambient or soil condition, destination standard and required documents. GlobalFortuneCables can coordinate a specification review and quotation from these project inputs.
Standards and project evidence: what each layer proves
| Reference layer | Use in procurement | What to confirm | Buyer action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Temperature | Changes heat dissipation | Ambient and conductor temperature | Apply the project factor |
| Grouping | Adjacent loaded cables add heat | Number and arrangement of circuits | Use the actual route |
| Installation | Changes thermal conditions | Air, tray, conduit, duct or soil | Calculate from the specified method |
Frequently Asked Questions
What is cable derating?
It is the reduction applied to a reference current rating so the cable remains within its thermal and installation limits.
Does a larger cable always solve derating?
No. Terminations, route arrangement, short-circuit performance and voltage drop still require verification.
What should I send for a sizing quotation?
Send voltage, current, length, installation, grouping, ambient condition, standard and destination.
