Marine Cable Selection: What Shipboard Projects Should Check
Select marine and shipboard cables by checking voltage, fire performance, flexibility, environment, approval and installation requirements.
2026-11-02 · Updated November 2, 2026 · Reviewed for publication by the technical sourcing team · For project specification and compliance decisions, confirm the applicable local code and model-specific documents with the project engineer, certification body or inspection authority.
Why shipboard cable is different
Shipboard routes may involve vibration, salt air, oil or chemicals, limited space, fire zones, movement and weight constraints. A fixed building cable is not automatically suitable for a vessel.
Check the approval path early
Confirm vessel type, class society, flag-state and contract requirements. Request model-specific datasheets, certificates, test documents and installation guidance.
Separate fixed and frequent-flexing duty
IEC 60092-352:2025 addresses fixed systems, including systems subject to ship movement and vibration. Frequent or continual flexing should be reviewed against the appropriate flexible-cable specification.
Plan logistics
Confirm drum lengths, markings, pulling limits, bend radius, storage, jointing space and delivery port before shipment.
Standards and project evidence: what each layer proves
| Reference layer | Use in procurement | What to confirm | Buyer action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Route duty | Controls construction | Fixed, vibration or frequent flexing | Match the applicable specification |
| Environment | Controls sheath choice | Salt, oil, chemicals, moisture and fire zones | Request model evidence |
| Approval | Controls acceptance | Class, flag, contract and project rules | Confirm before quotation |
Frequently Asked Questions
What is IEC 60092-352:2025?
It provides basic requirements for selection, installation and operating conditions of cables for fixed electrical systems on board ships.
Can an industrial cable be used on a ship?
Only if the vessel specification and approval route accept it.
Why does marine cable weight matter?
Weight affects routing, supports, installation effort and vessel constraints.
